Wind Tunnel Tuneup: Faster Bikes
The numbers on the meter provide a relative measure of Gotti's aerodynamic efficiency. As the wind flows past Gotti, some of it is interrupted. This causes the floor that takes up most of the center of the tunnel to dip and sway ever so slightly. Since the floor is actually the top of a massive aerodynamic balance, the slightest movement is measured and recorded by a bank of computers. Later these second-by-second samplings will be distilled into information that hopefully will help Gotti win the world's best-known bicycle race. As the test begins, the numbers on the display fluctuate randomly. Then, as Gotti lowers his head, they begin to drop: 3.0, 2.82, 2.65. The numbers give Gotti a relative measure of the degree to which his bicycle and body impede airflow. Smaller numbers represent less aerodynamic drag.
YMCA offers new activities for 2008
There are two Cardio Waves, which are workout machines designed to move multiple planes of the body. These new machines came in August, but the floor was recently refurbished. "A lot of members say they get a great workout on the Waves," Bremmerkamp said. "It's a very effective piece of equipment for the glutes and core muscles." There are also six Excite Treadmills, and all of the new equipment have personal TV screens with 32 cable stations. They also have various pre-programmed workouts, personal fans and a touch-screen. "It's nice to see the community is willing to provide this kind of quality," said Eric Rhea, a Carthage resident using one of the treadmills. Bremmerkamp was most excited about a new program for members; the Y's Way to Weight Management.
Far North Austin getting more luxury apartments
A Phoenix apartment developer has begun construction on two luxury apartment projects in far North Austin. Alliance Communities, the Texas division of Alliance Residential Co., is building Broadstone Travesia and Broadstone Grand Avenue, which will bring nearly 700 new apartments to the area. The 396-unit Broadstone Travesia is going up next to the 216,000-square-foot Travesia Corporate Park on Quick Hill Road across from La Frontera. The 280-unit Grand Avenue project is going up on one mile south of Round Rock on the northeast corner of the intersection of Grand Avenue Parkway and I-35. "The Austin economy is and will continue to be vibrant, creating strong population growth and employment," says Stephen Sweet, South Texas Division Partner of Alliance Communities.

2 little sisters mourned in W. Deptford
The family in the slate blue house on Red Bank Avenue was quiet, neighbors said, but everyone seemed to know the little girls. Aaliah, 10, and her sister, India, 6, rode their bicycles, waved hello and loved to play with the dog next door. "They were sweet little girls. It's just a tragedy that something like this happened," said neighbor John Randolph, 74. Aaliah Scott and India Duncan were found strangled Thursday night in their West Deptford home after a 90-minute standoff between police and their half-brother Marqueese Lee, 20. Yesterday, Lee was charged in the murders of the girls and aggravated assault on their mother, Lucille Bevans, 38, who fled the home around 8:30 p.m. after Lee allegedly hit her on the head with a hammer, according to the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.
