Deerfield annexation talks begin
Utica's Common Council begins to discuss a Deerfield Annexation bill and the session attracts a large crowd from Deerfield. The southern border of Deerfield extends to Utica's Bagg's Square area. Annexation would move that border about one mile to the north. The advantages to Deerfield, say those who favor annexation, would be that the area of the town annexed would get city police and fire protection, which would result in lower insurance rates. Utica also would extend to the area city water and gas mains as well as school facilities. Among Utica's advantages would be getting room to relocate the Mohawk River away from its current location at Bagg's Square and move it one mile north. That would rid the city of flooding problems along lower Genesee Street and give it room to build factories there and, perhaps, a new railroad passenger terminal. Opponents in Utica say the expense of annexation would be too great for the benefits received. 1908, 100 years ago Billboards banned Common Council members in Utica pass an ordinance prohibiting – under penalty of a $25 fine – the erection of "unsightly" billboards within city limits.

Obesity Wake-up Call: Changing Course (3 of 4)
"We're on a buddy system," says Heather Curry. When she decided to ditch the random diets and make a lifestyle change, her husband proved more than supportive. "He told me I'll be there for you I'll do whatever I can, and he most certainly has." A photo shows Heather and her husband in the fall of 2006, just a few months before she joined Memorial's Weight Management program. Less than a year later, you can see both making progress. "We went from having one bicycle to now we have 5 bicycles, instead of going out to eat and traveling there now we travel to go out on our bikes. We'll travel 2 hours to go ride 50 miles," says Heather. Victoria Bordelon says she "married a boy who likes to rock climb and cycles, so I started doing the cycling a few years ago." Her husband also serves as a motivating factor.
Del Piero scores late penalty as Juventus draws 1-1 at Catania
MILAN, Italy (AP) -Captain Alessandro Del Piero's last-minute penalty helped Juventus draw Catania 1-1 in the Serie A on Saturday. After falling behind in the first half, Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri put on four strikers and Catania defender Marco Biagianti brought down Del Piero from behind at the top of the area in the 90th minute as the Bianconeri scrambled for an equalizer. "We put everything into it and we were pretty satisfied at the end," Del Piero said. Gionatha Spinesi put Catania ahead in the 15th minute, flicking in a pass from Giuseppe Mascara in a play that may have been offside. Juventus and Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon froze on Spinesi's close-range shot. "I think they were encouraged by the fans; they started really strong," Del Piero said.
Dealing Hughes for Santana a questionable move
Abreu can walk after this season and Matsui and Damon after next. It looks like we might get to see guys like Jackson or Tabata sooner rather than later. Hughes projects to be great, while Santana is great. Maybe we could package Kennedy, Farnsworthless, Igawa, and someone like Ohlendorf for Santana, but I doubt it. Before the majority of the media anoint Johan Saintana, let's remember that he was bested by Barry Zito in his last post-season starts against the slap-hitting A's, and that his ERA in Fenway sits above 6.50! .
Democrats eyeing record turnout
And based on absentee voting to date, the Democrats could obliterate that record and even rival last week's GOP turnout of 444,090. As of Thursday the state had issued 53,936 absentee ballots — 32,164 for Democrats and 21,772 for the GOP primary Jan. 19 — according to figures from the State Election Commission. That means the Democratic absentee turnout is on track to approach 50 percent higher than the Republican absentee turnout. Absentee voting will continue through 5 p.m. today in the Democratic primary. Charleston County Democratic Party Chairman Waring Howe called the absentee numbers "tremendous" and said they bode well for an eyebrow-raising turnout on Saturday. well for an eyebrow-raising turnout on Saturday. "We're looking forward to a record turnout that will equal or exceed the Republicans on Jan.
Candidates up for south central Mesa challenges
Finter supports building more fire and police stations, but he thinks voters will reject the bond measure in its current form so soon after a proposed primary property tax "went down in flames" in 2006. Finter believes the proposed capital improvements are too important to risk defeat because of the way they would be funded. He would prefer paying for them with an additional sales tax. "First, we have to re-establish credibility with the citizens of Mesa," he said. Finter's stance on the property tax has made some waves. Although the Mesa Chamber of Commerce endorsed him, it said they had reservations about his views. "I'm not very happy with Mr. Finter not supporting the secondary property tax, but I like Alex and think he's a good man, so hopefully he'll come around," Whalen said.
