A new nuclear age

Its return on investment may not look favourable now, but when the price of electricity doubles, triples, or quadruples, that makes the solar rooftop look a lot better.AND...conserve energy now.

I note you say the new nuclear technology has a much lower risk for disaster Is that not in itself an admission that nuclear technology is unsafe?

I note that you are using an electrical device containing components made of plastics, arsenic, cadmium, bromine, chromium, lead and mercury to make your posts. Given that thousands of people per year are electrocuted or poisoned by said chemicals are you not engaging in unsafe activities?

And your point is?Electrical devices kill people because the user usually mistreat them or fails to maintain them adequately People also have a choice in that knowing that there is very small chance it might kill them, whether they want to use such devices.

James Blunt tells British GQ that his sister couldn't get to Ireland so his solution was to sell her on eBay. He says:

"I came back to the flat where my sister was staying and she was crying because she couldn't get to a funeral in Ireland. The planes were on strike, the ferry was out of season, and there were no trains. I ended up whacking it on eBay: 'Damsel in distress seeks knight in shining armor! Desperate to get to a funeral in southern Ireland, please help!' The bids flooded in and the guy who won had a helicopter. He flew her to the funeral. That was three years ago. This summer they're getting married. That was the stupidest thing I've ever sold on eBay – my sister."

And just to remind you why we hate James Blunt, here are pictures of Petra Nemcova, whom he somehow managed to date.

Discover Portsmouth's best kept secret

The four men were in smokers' exile on the front stoop at the bar, when the woman parked her car, got out and approached them, alone. She stopped at the foot of the stairs and looked up the four steps to the men. The men looked back. The woman spoke first. All four men began laughing. The woman walked up the stairs, spoke again and joined the laughter. The five then spoke for several minutes, laughing often, soaking up the weak winter sun. As the men stubbed out their cigarettes, the woman bade them farewell. She returned to her car. The men stayed outside to wave goodbye as she drove away. This took place at the Beach House, 506 Park Ave., in downtown Island Park. If you are there in January, you must be a local. Of course, that is almost as true in July, too. Island Park is one of this area's best kept secrets.

Every time I see this I wonder where the bears keep their soda to keep it from freezing in those temperatures. Forget chapped lips too, since those bottles needed bottle openers I always picture them walking funny from storing and opening all those Cokes. .

Bike-theft suspect hangs self in hospital

A Longview man who faced multiple charges for allegedly stealing a string of expensive bicycles throughout the Northwest killed himself Saturday morning in a Longview psychiatric hospital where he'd been admitted after two previous suicide attempts.

Jacob J. Bos, a 35-year-old podiatrist, was the subject of a Page 1 story Friday in The Seattle Times.

Longview police spokeswoman Deborah Johnson said Bos committed suicide at St. John Medical Center in Longview at 6 a.m.

Bos hung himself with a belt in a hospital bathroom, according to Dr. Richard Kirkpatrick, who owns the clinic where Bos worked.

Bos had pleaded not guilty in Cowlitz County Superior Court to 12 counts of possessing or selling stolen bikes.

Seattle police arrested him last month after they traced him through DNA on a coffee cup left at a Fremont bicycle shop, where he'd allegedly stolen a $6,800 bike, and on another occasion, a $5,500 bike.

N.Y. official wants gays in St Patrick's Day parade

The truth is, the parade is stuck, and it's stuck and mired in a controversy that takes away from what the parade has been and what the parade could be," Quinn told New York public radio's "Brian Lehrer Show" on Tuesday.

Representatives of the order could not be reached for comment.

Quinn, an Irish-American, is the city's top-ranking openly gay official and may run for mayor in 2009. Last year she refused to march, instead participating in Dublin's parade.

The New York parade, which will be held on March 17, is a private event, so Quinn has no authority as a city official to decide who can attend.

Paisley and McGuinness brokered a power-sharing agreement that brought together Northern Ireland's Protestants and Roman Catholics into the same provincial government in May, helping bring stability to the British province.

IDB approves US$176.7 million for urban transportation program for ...

The Inter-American Development Bank today approved a US$176.7 million loan to Brazil for an urban transportation program for its Federal District, where around 2.8 million commutes are made each day.

“This initiative will improve the mobility and accessibility for the population of the district, particularly its low-income segments, by further integrating its communities through financing of a modern Bus Rapid Transit System," said IDB team leader Rosana Brandao. “This will help to improve the circulation and safety of motorized and non-motorized forms of transportation."

The program will invest in road and urban infrastructure, including bus transfer stations, roadway and pedestrian safety, the construction of ramps at crosswalks, sidewalks and pedestrian walkways for persons with physical disabilities, the modernization of the traffic light system, bicycle paths or lanes, and the strengthening of institutional and management capacity in the area of transportation.
