EBay Chief Whitman, Web Pioneer, Plans to Retire

EBay's third-quarter listings of auction items for sale, a key barometer of the auction unit's health, fell 3%.

The timing of Ms. Whitman's retirement is of her own choosing, say people familiar with the situation. Not long after she joined eBay, Ms. Whitman declared that no CEO should stay more than a decade in the same job because people need new challenges and organizations need fresh perspectives. While she has backed away from that comment in recent years, Ms. Whitman now appears to be making good on that early pledge as she approaches her 10-year anniversary as eBay CEO this March.

Under Ms. Whitman, eBay has become one of the Internet's most successful businesses by pioneering a way for strangers to trade with each other online. She led the company through its September 1998 initial public offering, and eBay has since delivered more than 40 consecutive quarters of sequential revenue growth.

Gadgets Kyocera Buys Sanyo Mobile Phone Operations

Major electronics makers routinely cut portions of their business because of loss or a change in the company's strategy to make profits. Sanyo is no exception to this rule.

InformationWeek reports that Sanyo and handset maker Kyocera have finally ended negotiations that began in October for the sale of Sanyo's mobile phone group. Kyocera has agreed to purchase the Sanyo mobile phone operations for $375 million USD.

Typically, when a company like Sanyo sheds a division, it is due to poor performance in the marketplace or the lack of profitability. InformationWeek is reporting that Sanyo sold its mobile phone operations in part due to pressure from investors Goldman Sachs Group and Daiwa Securities on the Sanyo founding family.

The Sanyo handsets were popular among consumers.

Hip-Hop Rumors: Jay-Z Off To Apple? New G-Unit MCs? Kanye Is BACK!

Instead, he brought out The Game and Will.I.Am, who was on crutches for some reason. (Proably dancing too hard) How crazy is it that the BEP front man caught a major brick this year, while Fergie went on to do superlative things? Ah, who cares. I like Willie. Anyway, I wonder if Nas is going to drop next month still. Somehow, I don't see it happening. I want to get a new Nas CD though. He's the man... the N-Word Man.

Iranian Peace Runner Navigates Maine Roads Enroute to Ground Zero

On Highway 41 in Florida it was crocodiles. Just outside El Paso, Texas, he was arrested, fingerprinted and detained for seven hours before a tobacco chewing police officer learned that Reza Baluchi, 35, by birth an Iranian, did not represent a threat to border security.

Baluchi is running the perimeter of the United States in the name of world peace, and to raise funds for the Children's Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

On Jan. 4, he expects to arrive at Ground Zero in New York City, having run nearly 11,000 miles since June 17. He started his run from Central Park, heading south along the eastern seaboard. He passed through Newcastle on Friday, just a few hundred miles from his goal, and within reach of a world record for running the perimeter of the United States in less than seven months.
