| May be 'winter of discontent' for Royal Gorge
Back before Lakes Serena and Dulzura at Donner Summit were a twinkle in an early subdivider/developer's eye, they wore the much more prosaic name of Ice Lakes. True to form, every winter they obligingly iced over. For a brief time, a commercial ice-harvesting operation was carried out on the Ice Lakes. These lakes still freeze pretty solid. In colder years, before heavy snowfalls, they support ice skating and winter frolicking - think of a picture painted by Brueghel or a Currier and Ives print. How solid do Serena and Dulzura freeze? This year, the Sierra Lakes County Water District directed employees to study the depth of freeze, and recent ice core samples have shown that at the channel between the lakes, it's frozen solid. The channel is 412 feet deep, so that's 412 feet of hard, solid ice.
Still remembering Steve 50 years later
Nearly 2,000 students with financial needs have received assistance for such items as a homecoming dress or a warm coat. About $500 to $800 is given yearly. The money comes from dividends from stock in Westar Energy, purchased half a century ago from KPL, Bob Swan said. Swan is looking to increase the amount given and to add a Topeka School Fund/Steve Swan scholarship. "If the response is what I pray for and in keeping with Steve's dedicated life, there will be a Steve Fund Scholarship established and awarded each year to a deserving student who best exemplifies the values that guided Steve's brief but inspirational life," Bob Swan wrote in the commemorative book. To make a tax-deductible donation, send it to Topeka School Fund/Steve Swan, P.O.
Kiraitu must be stunned as Imanyara concedes VIP slap
It would be interesting to know Mr Kiraitu Murungis honest opinion about his neighbours allegations against the First Lady. The Energy Minister can be brutally honest. He can be trusted to talk his mind on issues angels would not dare hint to with gestures. Where it comes to handling women, whether First or Second, short or tall, willing or unwilling, friendly or hostile, the South Imenti MP boasts of an unrivalled, well documented and freely shared authority. That is why it is reasonable to bet he will likely be penning down another poem about his Central Imenti counterpart, Mr Gitobu Imanyara. Never mind where the truth lies about the alleged altercation with Mama Jimmy. As a genuinely creative mind, it is not beyond Kiraitu to evince what might or might not have happened. If he remains loyal to his imaginative or reflective muse, he might want to title his next verse Slaps and State House or Fighting a Submissive Woman.
Happy All-Star Break: Denis Savard, Brent Sutter Call Out Their ...
When Denis Savard and Brent Sutter were teammates on the 1996 Blackhawks, I wonder if they ever thought they'd be coaching in the National Hockey League at the same time. Beyond that, I wonder if they ever imagined they'd throw their players under the bus on the same night. After Chicago's 1-0 loss to Columbus last night, Coach Savard went rip city on a number of unnamed players that the team has committed to via long-term contracts, but whom he feels have not committed to paying the price for victory: "They were very happy when they signed it ... Well, commit to us, commit to the jersey, commit to the people here. They don't want to commit to the Indian, let's go upstairs and get them out of here ... The message of (Chairman Rocky Wirtz, President John McDonough and general manager Dale Tallon) is pretty clear: We're here to win the Stanley Cup.

Paying back: Former Dover woman plans 46-mile trek to help others
There was a time when Stacey Baker couldnt put one step in front of another, so her commitment to run and cycle 46.2 miles this month is a testament to her emotional as well as physical strength. The former Dover resident is indebted to an international foundation that helped her recover from Guillain Barre Syndrome, and she believes in paybacks. But the Durham, N.C., resident also is paying it forward to help other GBS victims who find themselves struggling with the life-threatening experience. She is Running for a Reason to raise funds for the GBS/CIDP (Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy) Foundation International. Ten years ago, Baker was a Dover High senior, captain of a state-bound volleyball team and looking forward to a full year of activities when she was stopped suddenly by a mysterious illness that zapped her strength and ultimately left her paralyzed.
Forty-nine miles per gallon for this car
MT. VERNON REGISTER NEWS (MT VERNON, Ill.) MT VERNON, Ill. — High gas prices? What high gas prices? It takes Russell Davis less than $20 to fill up his car, and he can drive it up to 500 miles before needing to refuel.Davis, of Mt. Vernon, last year purchased a "hybrid" 2005 Toyota Prius, the environmentally friendly car that gets in the neighborhood of 50 miles to the gallon at peak performance."The technology just boggles my mind," said Davis. "There's a computer printout and it said that I am averaging 48 miles a gallon for (my last) 100 miles. "It varies, really, but I average closer to 49."Hybrid cars — vehicles that combine two or more power sources — were popular when they first came out about five years ago, but lagged in sales — at least until the recent upswing in gas prices."They were very popular when they initially came out," said Trevor Moore, manager at Tyler's Motors, a local Toyota dealer that orders the Prius for its customers.
Governor opts to be stubborn in scandal
Blunt's hasty announcement is the first inkling since the controversy broke over Martin's mishandling of the firing of former staff attorney Scott Eckersley that the governor might be ready to accept responsibility for clear violations of the Sunshine Law and the state's e-mail retention policies. But jettisoning Martin after so many public denials of the former chief of staff's misdeeds will only go so far in regaining any trust in the ability of the governor to be accountable to the taxpayers. Indeed, ever since the News-Leader asked for an e-mail from Martin in August, the Blunt administration has charted too many courses to navigate when it comes to outlining its policy on the Sunshine Law and e-mail retention. We don't understand why the governor won't just come out and say that he and members of his staff got it wrong.
