10 things you must see at the auto show

With some 1,000 vehicles spread across two halls at the Chicago Auto Show, visitors who wander might have their legs and feet give out before they see some of the main attractions.

And though beauty is in the eye of the beholder, here are 10 things not to miss.

Just remember that automakers have been known to change their minds so some of these vehicles may make only a brief appearance at McCormick Place -- if at all.

82% of Canadians would rather work than retire: poll

When my husband announced he was retiring, many of his co-workers asked him where he was going to work. The expectation was that he would find another job elsewhere...

When he said he wouldn't get another job, people were shocked and asked "but what will you do??" His answer "anything I want."

Robber shoots Bojangles' cook 4 times

When two men in ski masks tried to rob him at the trash bin behind the Bojangles' on Monday night, Charles Hamilton thought it was a joke. He didn't even have a dollar in his pockets.

Hamilton, 39, a cook at the fast-food restaurant on Ashley Phosphate Road, was recovering from surgery Tuesday at Medical University Hospital. He was shot four times in the failed robbery attempt and is expected to survive, though he lost a kidney and part of his liver, his family said.

The North Charleston High School graduate who never married or had children was sedated Tuesday evening and unable to speak. But he told his family the story earlier in the day.

Hamilton took out the trash just before closing time and was met near the trash bin by two men wearing camouflage jackets and black ski masks.

Lab-made genome gives new life to ethics debate

We really need to find an alternative to taking carbon out of the ground, burning it, and putting it into the atmosphere. That is the single biggest contribution I could make.'

Furthermore it suggests that one of the main purposes for creating synthetic bacteria would be to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.

This guy wants to reinvent the world energy markets via biology. Uh, for a lack of better word, 'cool'. Posted 24/01/08 at 10:57 PM EST | Alert an Editor | Link to Comment .

Proposed parking rate changes

The Pensacola Downtown Improvement Board will vote today on the following proposed changes to off-street downtown parking rates. It will require a supermajority (at least four of the five board members) voting in favor to pass. If approved:

n The daily hourly rate at the city's Jefferson Street parking garage will remain at 50 cents, but the daily maximum rate would be reduced from $7.50 to $4. After-hours parking -- from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. -- which now is free, would rise to a $2 flat rate, except for Sundays, which would remain free. This would help fund hiring off-duty Pensacola police officers on bicycles to patrol the garage from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. Brighter lighting would also be installed.

n Now, only one-year parking contracts can be arranged at the Jefferson Street garage.

Bicyclist fined $1,050 for traffic infraction

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) -- Kajuan Cornish didn't know he was such a danger on his bicycle, and now he's facing hefty fees that could have paid for him to have a car.

One day after Gov. Timothy M. Kaine admitted the state's so-called abusive driver fees had failed and called for them to be repealed, Cornish was ordered to pay a fee of $1,050 for recklessly operating his 18-speed Huffy in an intersection during rush hour.

"A bike with pedals -- a 4-year-old can ride a bike," Cornish said Thursday. "I could see it happen if I'm riding the wrong way down the expressway -- that's dumb."

Cornish, 19, doesn't drive and was convicted of reckless driving in Newport News traffic court for a ticket he received after riding his bike across Warwick Boulevard.

'Runway's' fabulous accessory

Requests to talk to Garcia did not yield an interview, alas. The blog has been profitable, filled with ads, though ridiculously time-consuming and not profitable enough to quit their day jobs, they say. Plus, it's painfully seasonal. Major withdrawal ahead, as the show's finale is Feb. 27 and March 5. Designers Jillian, Christian, Chris and Rami are still in. T Lo, as they're collectively called, say they watch the show in their pajamas with wine and cheese and a couple of friends, on a vintage '60s daybed covered in brown velvet and a generous amount of pillows, in their cozy sloped-ceilinged third floor. They are online about 16 hours a day. They watch each episode six times. The morning after a show, with impatient e-mails pouring in ("C'mon boys, wake up!"), Lorenzo approaches Tom for their Project Rungay staff meeting.

No bikes on 183-A

I wrote a column on Monday about a guy, Chuck Thomas, who commutes to work on the Texas 45 North tollway. On his bicycle.

I said he could do so because the Texas Transportation Commission has not voted to make biking illegal on its three toll roads in the Austin area.

The board of the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority, however, did vote about a year ago to make biking illegal on its single toll road, 183-A. That road, if you don't know, connects at its southern end to Texas 45 North and then goes for 4.5 miles north to RM 1431.

There are signs on its entrances indicating no bikes are allowed.

One caveat: The mobility authority built another 7.1 miles of two-lane frontage roads from RM 1431 to north of Leander, where the lanes merge with the old U.S.
